Blue crab, also known as green crab or delicious swimming crab, is a general term for crustacean decapod. Common edible crab of western Atlantic; delicious. It is a crustacean distributed in the western Atlantic Ocean, the southern Indian Ocean of Australia, the Pacific coast of Central America and the Gulf of Mexico. Often inhabits mud banks, bays and deltas. They are Maryland's representative crustacean and an important local catch.
The head and breastplate of the blue crab is about 7.5 cm (3_) long and 15_18 cm wide, with a pale green back and pale blue feet. There were large spines on each side, and eight short spines between the big spines and the eyes. Chelicerae large, unequal from left to right. The fifth pair of feet is flat and used for swimming. During the oviposition period, the female crab has a raised abdomen and eggs inside. After two weeks, the fertilized eggs hatch into a young crab and stay on the female crab for a short period. Blue crabs can distinguish between males and females from their bellies. The male crab has a long and narrow rim, while the female has a broad and round rim. Natural predators of blue crabs include eels, totoaba, stonefish, yellowtail flatmouth totoaba, trout, some sharks, and humans. Blue crabs are omnivorous, eating both plants and animals. Blue crabs usually eat bivalves, annelids, small fish, plants and anything else they can eat. They eat animal bodies such as carrion, other blue crabs and garbage.
Blue crabs in eastern North America can control invasive true clover crab populations. The two crab populations are inversely correlated. For example, the Chesapeake Bay is full of blue crabs and there are no true clover crabs. Blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay have seasonal migrations. After mating, the females migrate to the southern Chesapeake Bay to fertilize their eggs with sperm from the males. In November or December, the female crab releases her eggs. After hatching, the larvae float in the mouth of the bay for 4-5 weeks before returning to the bay.
